Geographical coverage

Currently eco-finance.org provides detailed information on eco-finance in South East European countries (Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Croatia, Kosovo, FYR Macedonia, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia), as well as Poland and selected additional countries. Website coverage will be gradually extended to gloabl coverage.

Information provided includes links to various eco-finance mechanisms operational in a given country as well as relevant relevant background information. Information published is derived from Aequilibrium Consulting's work experience.

Note that despite our efforts, the information provided on this website may be incomplete and some existing eco-finance institutions and mechanisms may not be listed on our website. We welcome suggestions from website users on how we could further complete the information offered on our website: Click here to contact us.

eco-finance.org is committed to extending coverage of the website to additional countries and other eco-finance institutions. If you are interested and/or able to assist the expansion of the website please contact us.

Types of financing mechanisms covered

This website focuses on "eco-finance", i.e. financing aimed at supporting environmental projects and investments. eco-finance.org currently provides information on eco-finance in the following main sectors:

  • Biodiversity and conservation finance
  • Carbon finance
  • RECP* and eco-technology finance
  • Waste management finance
  • Water finance

* RECP = resource efficient and cleaner (industrial) production

eco-finance.org covers both, eco-finance offered on commercial (i.e., non-subsidized) terms and eco-finance offered on subsidized terms. In addition, both eco-finance from domestic sources and from international/foreign sources is covered.

Elaboration of "institutional profiles"

For selected eco-finance institutions eco-finance.org provides "institutional profiles". These profiles contain more detailed, and often exclusive and original information on selected domestic eco-finance mechanisms and institutions. Currently, profiles of 15 eco-finance mechanisms in South East Europe are provided. In most cases, the profiles presented on eco-finance.org represent the only publicly available, detailed source of information (in English) on recent operations of the featured institutions. Click here to view these institutional profiles.

Such institutional profiles are being elaborated based on a questionnaire provided by eco-finance.org. Typically, an institutional profile is drafted by a representative of the respective eco-finance mechanism/institution, by a local consultant or directly by eco-finance.org. In principle, each profile is drafted based on publicly available documentation. Before publication on our website, the draft profile is finalized based on comments from eco-finance.org. The author's contact details and affiliation are published in each profile available on eco-finance.org. If you are interested in having your eco-finance institution presented on eco-finance.org with such an institutional profile, please contact us.

Target audience

eco-finance.org is an independent information platform that aims at providing reliable information about eco-finance institutions and mechanisms operating in different countries throughout the world. In particular, eco-finance.org is designed to support the work of the following "stakeholders":

Stakeholder

Why this website might be useful for the stakeholder

Eco-finance institutions

  • Better visibility may lead to more and better project applications to the eco-finance institution, thus improving the overall portfolio and impacts.
  • Better prospects for cooperation with other financing institutions and foreign aid institutions.
  • Access to information about other eco-finance institutions may help to further develop own operational policies.

Potential foreign project proponents (including providers of environmental technologies)

  • Easily accessible, detailed information enables potential foreign investors to quickly learn about possible in-country sources of co-financing for environmental investments.

Foreign aid institutions

  • Easy to find, "one stop" source of detailed information about different funding mechanisms improves awareness and knowledge of those mechanisms.
  • Better, more accessible information about in-country funding mechanisms may facilitate cooperation, including technical assistance, co-financing of projects or intermediary relationships.
  • Greater cooperation with in-country funding mechanisms may strengthen the institutional capacity of those mechanisms and lead to more effective and efficient environmental financing.

Expert advisers and consultants

  • More accessible and detailed information about subsidized financing mechanisms allows experts working on their behalf to provide better, more useful and effective analysis, assistance and advice.
